Een remschijf en remblok zorgt dat uw auto tijdens het remmen snelheid afneemt.
Tijdens het remmen ontstaat er frictie tussen de remblokken alsmede de remschijven. Deze wrijving zorgt voor warmte .

Schijfremmen hebben een goede koeling omdat het remvlak groter is en het vlak rechstreeks met de koelende lucht in aanraking komt. Als de remschijf uitzet, zal dat grotendeels radiaal gebeuren en dit heeft geen enkel invloed op de werking. Bij schijfremmen is de kans op het optreden van de reeds genoemde fading veel kleiner wegens de betere koeling en de lagere snelheid van de wrijvingsvlakken die langs de remvoeringen draaien.
